If you find yourself making plans for building a house or even just redecorating, there are different types of plans you can have for your kitchen. Possibly the most productive design is the U-shaped kitchen which has three separate walls. It maximizes productivity for storage space and counter space but is not best for accommodating more than one cook or entertaining. I suggest you have a space that is eight feet by eight feet at a bare minimum so that you can have about four feet of center space in the kitchen. Workstation Shape

Another popular configuration is the L-shape kitchen plan where one workstation is on one wall and the next wall features two workstations. It is usually more efficient than the U-shaped plan if the workstations are near the end of the L. When the kitchen space has limitations, you may find the L-shape plan to be difficult to implement. There must be at least four feet of kitchen counter space between the two workstations that share the wall. If examining the layout of the workstations, you want to make sure that it uses a workflow that begins with the refrigerator, then to the sink, then to the stovetop, and then to the serving area. The opposite end of the corner in the L is the optimal area to have your eating nook.


A favorite plan is the island kitchen plan at which there is a workstation, normally a sink or stovetop, that is freestanding. For top efficiency the work triangle needs to be over twenty-six feet, so for large kitchens, this is a great plan. The island kitchen design may not be good to have when your workstations are on the opposite ends of each other. Specialty countertops similar to a butcher block are great to have on the island. Actually, an island that may be rolled outdoors, when entertaining guests on your deck or patio. A peninsula plan is usually when the island is attached to a wall or sections of cabinets. It truly is most suitable if you do not possess enough space for the regular island kitchen plan. With this style of plan, the cook can be at a workstation, having a view of some other room, which is nicer than staring at a wall.

The most prevalent plan for smaller homes is the one-wall layout. Although this design is not the most efficient for the cook, it won’t need a lot of space to set up. There is typically a doorway at each end of the kitchen so the area is likely to have a lot of traffic.
